THE POWER OF ODDS

There are certain design principles when it comes to Interior Design and getting them right is the key to creating the most spectacular of Interiors. These principles make things easy not just for the designers but also for the Clients, the owners whose space is being designed. One such rule that will be talked about here is “The Power of Odds”.

Now one must think of what exactly this is. Well, it is a fairly simple concept of arranging things in a group of odd numbers. Simply put, while decorating the space, one must put the decoratives and the artwork in a group of odd numbers and not the even numbers.

But why is this? Because it makes the area look more appealing, comprehensible and memorable to the minds of the viewers creating more visual appeal. This cannot be done with even number of things put together. The eyes and the brain are connected and thus what is visually appealing to the eyes is understandable to the brain as well. Thus, while even number of decoratives put together will hide those decoratives that are kept at the back creating confusion and unattractiveness to the minds, the grouping of odds brings out the beauty of each of the pieces standing out against the backdrop.

  • Here are some looks to show a grouping of 3:

Here the 3 identical vases together are although aligned linearly in the most simplistic manner, it is creating a chic effect against a rather natural setting.

  • Using 5 things together:

Here the plants aligned in a number of 5 in a group makes it simple to comprehend, categorise and visually appealing to eyes in the sense that the segregation of the things becomes easier.

  • Here is How Number 7 can work out:

Here the room is created keeping in mind the rule of odds using a combination of 7 different things across the room. In an overall lighter background, the shade of dark grey is used at different places to fill up the room while dividing the room into 7 segments, with tabletop falling in one segment to lighting to the backsplash, the chairs next to it, the wall at the background, then the lounge and pole behind it. This is rather a clever and intelligent way of using the rule of odds.
